After repeatedly telling us that his glorious ballroom would be funded by private money – without disclosing the sources of those funds – President Trump is now asking Congress for one billion dollars to pay for it. Not incidentally, one billion is five times the two hundred million he originally told us the ballroom would cost.

A week or so ago, on the verge of a bipartisan agreement that would fund the TSA, Coast Guard and everyone in the Department of Homeland Security except ICE – leaving problems with the latter to be worked out later – Trump shut it all down. He tells his Republicans that under no circumstances are they to make a deal with the Democrats. And like the lemmings they are, his Republicans throw themselves over the nearest cliff, politically speaking, to do his bidding.

A long time ago, I went to went to see my grandmother – my mother’s mother – who, well into her nineties, was living out the last few years of her life at a seniors’ home. There in her room, she held court in a manner of speaking, sitting in a chair, talking for a while to some of my cousins and me. Many years later, I’d have no memory of the event were it not for the moment when she told one particular cousin that she, my grandmother, matriarch of our family, thought the dress my cousin was wearing was particularly unattractive. It was a strangely mean and embarrassing thing to say, but how she made my cousin feel that day never crossed her mind.

Let me start by confessing that I’m no fan of Donald Trump. Not even close. But I don’t what anything to happen to him, physically that is. I know he’s seventy-nine, overweight and that his exercising is limited to playing golf and walking up the runway stairs onto Air Force One. And then there’s that creepy little dance he does when the music plays at his rallies. No one lives forever but, for humane and political reasons, I wish him well.

The government of world’s greatest economy misses the point.
Standing there at the podium from the tush of our government in Mar-a-Lago, and then later in The White House situation room, our President, wearing a white trucker hat with “USA” embroidered on it, announces and then watches our attack on Iran, code name “Epic Fury.” The imagery of it screams immaturity and incompetence.

President Trump has been losing in court, most recently and dramatically as evidenced by yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling nullifying tariffs he has instituted during his second term. His is in an increasingly difficult position for a leader whose personality can’t accept being wrong.

As President Trump is beginning to realize – despite his limited intelligence and reasoning distorted by the malignant narcissism by which he is afflicted – voters don’t care about rates of inflation. What they care about is prices. That the rate of inflation for a given item might be zero is inconsequential if the price of that item is so high as to make it unbearably expensive.

It’s time we need to start saying, out loud and repeatedly, what everyone here and abroad knows full well. Donald Trump isn’t just stupid or confused, doesn’t just fail to understand how to solve our problems. And his politics has nothing to do with it. The problem is that he’s actually mentally ill, suffering from clinical “malignant narcissism” according to many psychologists. As such, he cares only about himself. It’s the simple, but nonetheless profound diagnosis that explains everything he does.

Media are increasingly describing President Trump as a “lame duck” – so named after the bird that can no longer fly. Constitutionally unable to run for a third term – or win re-election if he did – it doesn’t surprise anyone that Trump is thinking about his legacy. Replacing the historic East Wing of The White House with the “Trump Ballroom.” Renaming the Kennedy Center. What’s next? “Trump…” instead of “Dulles International” or “Reagan National Airport”? Pretending to be only musing about putting his head on Mt. Rushmore or maybe a new coin of the realm.
