A Long-Awaited Off-Ramp for the Republicans in Congress

Without a doubt, there are a good number of Republicans in Congress who have long been dreaming of the day when Donald J. Trump would go away.  That day has come as a result of President Trump having threatened the people of Iran with annihilation.  According to international law, just the threat of annihilation is illegal.  More importantly, according to common sense and all manner of normal and reasonable considerations, it was a stupendously ridiculous and dangerous thing to do.

A week or so ago, on the verge of a bipartisan agreement that would fund the TSA, Coast Guard and everyone in the Department of Homeland Security except ICE – leaving problems with the latter to be worked out later – Trump shut it all down.  He tells his Republicans that under no circumstances are they to make a deal with the Democrats.  And like the lemmings they are, his Republicans throw themselves over the nearest cliff, politically speaking, to do his bidding.

The Amoral Politics of Trump Era Republicanism

 As President Trump is beginning to realize – despite his limited intelligence and reasoning distorted by the malignant narcissism by which he is afflicted – voters don’t care about rates of inflation.  What they care about is prices.  That the rate of inflation for a given item might be zero is inconsequential if the price of that item is so high as to make it unbearably expensive.

The Republicans aren’t even willing to talk.

Will somebody please suggest to the Democratic leadership in Congress that they hold – and widely publicize! – open, televised meetings to discuss a compromise with their Republican counterparts. If the Republicans refuse to come, the Democrats can hold the meeting(s) without them and let the failure of Republicans to attend be the headline of the day.

Democrats should be well-prepared with charts and videos to make their arguments.
