Out of Control

Sometimes it’s the little things that are the most telling.

As you may have already heard, President Trump has “ruled” – and I mean that literally – that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Juneteenth will no longer be fee-free days at our national parks.  In their place, he has added Flag Day (June 14) to the list which just happens to be his birthday.

President Trump, overwhelmed by envy at his first term predecessor’s intelligence, class and well-deserved popularity, can’t stand former President Obama.  But then President Trump is not crazy about black and other non-white people in general.  He’s a renown bigot.  No argument there.

For a political animal, disrespecting any major voting group is normally out of the question, but then there’s nothing particularly normal about Trump and the people pulling his strings exponentially more and more so as he ages.

I’m getting the feeling that we’re watching someone, already mentally ill, in the process of losing the rest of his mind.

The Democratic Party and liberal pundits need to catch up.  Trump and the dwindling numbers of Republicans and others who still follow his lead are no longer playing politics.  Simply put, he’s just out of control, choosing to let his ignorance and prejudices run amuck regardless of their implications for next year’s elections, the Constitution, rule of law or even basic standards for courtesy and kindness.

It’s as if he no longer cares about being popular which must be particularly hard for a person driven by malignant narcissism.  Pushing 80, under water in the polls with respect to every aspect of his Presidency, President Trump and those around him who have bet on the future of his movement seem to be entering a “f**k you” stage of their government.  My concern is not just that it’s unpleasant and hard to watch, but that it’s a madness that is extremely dangerous for our country and for the world in general in which the role of America is increasingly uncertain.
